I have been asking many of my colleagues in the art and culture writing business if they are finding the practice a bit difficult in these times. These times, many of them said, are similar to past times, and that does give us all a bit of a reference point as to how we confront the present as arbiters of history. I recently spoke to journalist and former war correspondent Joanne Levine about how she has been able to write in these moments and she told me, “Dissent has always found a safe harbor in art. The challenge is to keep writing, singing, and painting. Voices must not be silenced.”
