It has been a minute since we last 3-dotted our way through some art happenings, as, well, a lot of art happenings are happening and we happen to have written about a few. But I woke this morning to a slew of releases and updates on all things LA art week and around the globe… so let’s dot them!
First thing, in NYC, go see Fredericks & Freiser’s showing of Lizzie Lunday and The Sky Below… I’ve always been a fan of Lunday’s swirling, mythical paintings, and this one looks delicious… Hashimoto Contemporary has a new show opening this weekend with Huntsville-based artist Sara Hagale, and down the street, Entrance has Seth Cameron on… Zwirner has Dan Flavin on, while also announcing the representation of Louis Fratino, who also will have a museum show at the Baltimore Museum of Art called Fratino and Matisse: To See This Light Again… that looks stunning as the buzz continues to grow around the young painter… in design, R & Company have Luam Melake for Resemblance of Things… Karma has what appears to be a showstopping Dike Blair show… we are still very interested and excited about the Duchamp retrospective coming to MoMA, and the Diego and Frida show there will be gaining a ton of attention… Lily Taylor at Monya Rowe also looks like a nice, intimate series of still-lifes…
In Europe and Asia, our friends at STEMS just opened a group show in Brussels… the CAN Art Fair is coming soon to Madrid, along with a Paul McCarthy show at Bowman Hal that will be wild…Shaqúelle Whyte’s Nine nights; Strange fruit at White Cube, Hong Kong is powerfully articulated… On March 14, Laurent Proux’ Out Of The Blue will come to GNYP in Antwerp…
Or course… LA, art week! You know I don’t like an art week, but sometimes they are just here and you go to embrace it… Patrick Martinez at Charlie James Gallery is going to kick things off in a very LA and strong way…. The Unibrow cover artist Barry McGee is taking over a 99cent store near LACMA with The Hole and Jeffrey Deitch… Speaking of LACMA, Village Square “brings together nearly 50 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from the Henry and Rose Pearlman Collection in a celebration of art and community” opens on February 22… David Salle’s pop-remixes comes to Sprüth Magers… Night Gallery is opening a solo show of landscapes by Mira Dancy… Lily Ramírez is at the Hill House… Takashi Murakami blew us away with his layered, detailed, historic works at Perrotin that was definitely not what we were expecting… Luc Tuymans at Zwirner will be special, and we will be previewing that one in the days to come… definitely want to immerse myself in the Christina Quarles’ show at Hauser & Wirth…
Frieze… Felix… Post… the fairs! There are fairs… there are booths… there are… arts. I know (after seeing a preview) that Andrew Park’s booth at Frieze with Gallery Anthony will be the talk of the fair… also, Charlie James showing of Ozzie Juarez, Manuel López, Patrick Martinez, Kristopher Raos, Jeffrey Sincich, basically all the friends, will also be our bee-line when we get in….
I’ll probably drink 3 more cups of coffee and add onto this post… dot some more… —Evan Pricco
