You may know Emma Fineman from any number of places—and that’s exactly how she prefers it. The fine-artist-slash-musician-slash-designer-slash-stylist-slash-performer-slash-multi-hyphenate most recently caught people’s attention through her collaboration with her sister (and SNL cast member), Chloe Fineman, creating a 1960s-inspired clothing collection for MOTHER Denim. The campaign shows the riotous duo in their designed garments in peak comedic form: careening down an imaginary highway with broken brakes, guessing accents through laughter, whipping up recipes made of plastic food—all framed as segments from Chloe’s fictional variety show.

Here were a fine artist and a comedian in the fashion world, flexing entirely new muscles. And, what struck me most was how easily both sisters could play both roles. I found myself curious—not just about the genetic alchemy behind two wildly talented siblings—but also about the courage it takes to work outside your usual practice.

So, I talked to Emma. Because, if there’s one thing Emma understands, it’s that creative lives rarely move in straight lines; they overlap and fold into each other, just like the best garments often do.
