I was procrastinating on my piece about Adele Renault’s latest show, Things I Can’t Unsee, at Good Mother Gallery in the West Adams district, Los Angeles, when my 83-year-old friend Arthur invited me on a fishing trip. My plan was to sort out the ineffable qualities of Adele’s fantastic work on a peaceful excursion up at Fishing Lodge, which is on a barge floating off the coast of Langara Island which is a big rock off the coast of Graham Island, which is a huge island off the coast of British Columbia, which is Canada. I have never been on a fishing trip before, so I presumed it would entail a couple hours a day casting lines, then back to the lodge to reflect and jot down thoughts on Renault’s compositions—the kind of trip where you sit with a thermos and the fog and maybe tap into some insight.
